Biological Rhythms and Sleep Flashcards
(37 cards)
Circadian Rhythms
A pattern of behavioral, biochemical, or physiological fluctuation that has a 24-hour period
Circa-
about
-Dies
Day
Diurnal
Active during the light periods of daily cycle
Nocturnal
Active during the dark periods of the daily cycle
Free-running
Rhythm of behavior shown by an animal deprived of external cues about time of day
Retinohypothalamic Tract
Master pacemaker for circadian rhythm
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN)
“the master clock”; Right above pituitary gland
SCN Lesion
Cause arrhythmia (abolishment of circadian rhythm)
SCN Transplant
Produced free-running activity of 20 hours
Circadian Rhythm in Infants
24 hour rhythm evident at 16 weeks. SHORTER sleep cycles.
2 genes/proteins in SCN that help with Clock/Cycle
Period (Per) and Cryptochrome (Cry)
Sleep Stages
Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4, REM
Beta Activity in Sleep
Mix of many different high frequencies with low amplitude
Alpha Rhythms
Lower frequency, higher amplitude
Delta Waves
lower frequency, higher amplitude
Stage 1
Alpha rhythms appear during relaxation. Vertex spikes appear.
Vertex Spikes
Sharp waves
Stage 2
Brief periods of sleep spindles and K complexes.
K complex
Weird big big spike
Stage 3
Slow-wave sleep is recognized by large slow delta waves.
REM
Map looks like that of being awake. Deep Muscle Relaxation in this stage.
Sleep by Age
More REM the younger.
Sleep Deprivation
Partial or Total Prevention of sleep
