What is the word equation for photosynthesis ?
CO2 + H2O = GLUCOSE + OXYGEN
How does CO2 get into a plant ?
From air, into leaves through stomata
How does H2O get into a plant ?
From the soil, into the roots
Where does glucose go in a plant ?
To various places
Where does oxygen go in a plant ?
To the air from leaves via stomata
What are stomata ?
Tiny holes in a leaf
How are leaves adapted for quick diffusion of CO2 ?
Having lots of stomata, leaves are thin
What happens to a plant if it loses too much water ?
It wilts
What are guard cells ?
They open and close to control the water vapour leaving it
What is photosynthesis ?
Using light energy to make food
What does the cytoplasm do ?
Where chemical reactions happen
What does the nucleus do ?
Contains DNA that stores info to control the cell
What does the cell wall do ?
Contains cellulose to give the cell strength and support
What does the vacuole do ?
Contains cell sap to provide support for the cell
What does the cell membrane do ?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell
What does the chloroplast do ?
Contains chlorophyll to trap light and be the site of photosynthesis
Name some uses of glucose ?
Respiration, lipids, cellulose, protein, starch.
How do you measure the rate of photosynthesis ?
You can count the bubbles of air from the pondweed in the test tube
How can you test for the presence of oxygen ?
Use a glowing splint and it re-lights
Name three factors that affect photosynthesis ?
Light intensity, concentration of CO2, Temperature
