Biology 1B - pedigrees Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is a pedigree
a diagram that shows the occurrence and appearance of genetic traits across several generations of a family
used to determine modes of inheritance
uses symbols to represent people and lines to represent genetic relationships
what do the symbols in a pedigree mean:
circle
square
horizontal lines
vertical lines
shading
diagonal line
circle - female
square - male
horizontal lines - mating
vertical lines - offspring
shading - trait of interest
diagonal line - person is deceased
what can determine if a trait is autosomal or X linked
pedigrees
describe what autosomal and X linked traits are
autosomal - passed from parents to offspring independent of the X and Y chromosomes
X-linked - almost exclusively passed on the X chromosome which determines if an individual is XX or XY
what are the 4 modes of inheritance
autosomal dominant
autosomal recessive
X linked dominant
X linked recessive
can pedigrees have multiple modes of inheritance
yes
what can X linked traits not do
be passed from father to son
male always passes on their Y chromosome to their son
