Biology Flashcards
(45 cards)
CNS
Composed of brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
Outside the Bain and spinal cord and has 21 cranial nerves, 31 spinal nerves
Motor neurons (efferent)
Carry info from CNS to the body
Sensory neurons (afferent)
Carry info from sensory receptors to CNS
Interneurons
Located at CNS and and directs incoming impulses to the correct area for processing
Autonomic nervous system
Under involuntary action
Somatic nervous system
Voluntary contractions that’s gives sensation of pain heat and balance
Sympathetic autonomic system
Causes body adjustments (sweating) and prepares body for emergencies, releases adrenaline and used during fight or flight
Parasympathetic autonomic system
Returns body to normal state after altered by sympathetic system and used during test and digest
Structural kinesiology
Study of muscles and how they’re involved in movements
Agonist
Muscle that causes the joint to move (prime mover)
Antagonist
Located at the opp side of the joint and must relax when agonist contracts to allow movement
Stabilizer
Muscles that surround the joint to stabilize it to enable another limb to move
Synergist
Muscles that assist in the action of the agonist (guiding muscles)
Neutralizer
Counteract the action of another muscle to prevent undesirable movements
Origin
Fixed end of the muscle
Insertion
Movable end
Slow twitch
Smaller less and smaller conduction velocity and produces less force and suited for endurance activities
Fast twitch
Larger and quicker conduction velocity with more force and designed to be explosive but fatigue easily
Reflex
Rapid automatic response to a stimuli
Autonomic reflex
Involved activation of miscle that regulates blood pressure digestion and sweating
Somatic reflex
Involves the stimulation of skeletal muscle
Reflex arc
Pathway that the initial stimulus and corresponding response travel
Receptor
Receives stimulus
