Biomacromolecules Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the four Biomacromolecules
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic acids
Monomer
small repeating molecule linked together to form a larger molecule. (known as a polymer)
Biomacromolecules
any large organic, complex molecules found in living things
How are proteins nucleic acids and complex carbohydrates built up
By linking monomers
Carbhohydrate
- smallest unit or monomer: Monosaccharides
-major functions: Energy for metabolism, building blocks for larger molecules
-Food Sources: Pasta, Rice, Potatoes
Lipids
- smallest unit or monomer: Glycerol, fatty acids
-major functions: storage of energy, cell membrane structure
-Food Sources: Avocado, olive oil
proteins
- smallest unit or monomer: amino acids
-major functions: used as coenzymes, internal defence
-Food Sources: meat, egg
Nucleic acids
- smallest unit or monomer: Nucleotides
-major functions: store and transmit genetic information
-Food Sources: Beef Spinach
