Biomes Flashcards

Defining Biomes
“A biome is an area of the planet that can be classified according to the plants and animals that live in it. Temperature, soil, and the amount of light and water help determine what life exists in a biome”
What is the polar biome? (describe)
It’s frigid and you’re surrounded by ice. You wonder how any animal could survive in this extreme cold. Then a polar bear and her cubs lumber by, and in the ocean behind them a whale erupts from the water.
The coldest biome mostly seen as dry too
What is the tundra biome? (describe)
Tundra ecosystems are treeless regions found in the Arctic and on the tops of mountains, where the climate is cold and windy, and rainfall is scant. Tundra lands are covered with snow for much of the year, but summer brings bursts of wildflowers.
2nd coldest biome mostly dry
What is the boreal forest biome? (describe)
Boreal forests, also known as Taiga, circle the Northern Hemisphere to form a ring around the North Pole. They are part of the largest terrestrial biome, accounting for 27% of the world’s total forest area
less cold but still a little but mostly average
What is the mountain vegetation biome? (describe)
This biome is found all over the world. They are usually at an altitude of 10,000 feet if not more. But they often vary in size. In summer the average temperature ranges from 10° to 15°C.
mostly average temperature
What is the temperate forest biome?
Forest biomes are made up of trees and other woody plants. There are many types of forests. They are located in different parts of the world. The climate is different in each type of forest. Therefore, the plants and animals that can live in each type of forest are different.
In between warm and cold, most places are this temperature like Australia
What is the grassland biome? (describe)
Description. Grasslands are generally open and continuous, fairly flat areas of grass. They are often located between temperate forests at high latitudes and deserts at subtropical latitudes.
quiet warm but not to heavy
What is a Desert biome? (describe)
Deserts are extremely dry environments that are home to well-adapted plants and animals. The main types of deserts include hot and dry deserts, semi-arid deserts, coastal deserts, and cold deserts.
very warm getting to a higher temperature
What is a tropical forest biome? (describe)
The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long.Tropical rainforests are found closer to the equator where it is warm.very very warm
Name the three aquatic biomes
- fresh water
- marine
3.coral reefs
Name 3 countries that are a polar biome
Antarctica (not a country but the main polar region)
Greenland (Denmark) – large ice-covered area
Norway – Svalbard archipelago, high Arctic
Name 3 countries that are a tundra biome
Canada – Arctic tundra in the north
Russia – Siberian tundra
Iceland – Arctic-alpine tundra zones
Name 3 countries that are boreal forest biome
Russia – Largest boreal forest area in the world (Siberia).
Canada – Extensive taiga across the northern provinces.
Sweden – Dense coniferous forests in the north.
Name 3 countries that are desert biome
Saudi Arabia – Contains much of the Arabian Desert.
Australia – Home to several deserts, including the Great Victoria Desert.
Egypt – Sahara Desert covers most of the country.
Name 3 countries that are tropical forest biome
Brazil – The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world.
Democratic Republic of the Congo – Second-largest tropical rainforest in the Congo Basin.
Indonesia – Rich equatorial rainforests across islands like Borneo and Sumatra.
Name 3 countries that are grassland biome
Argentina – Pampas region is a classic temperate grassland.
Kazakhstan – Vast steppes dominate much of the landscape.
United States – Great Plains in central U.S. are extensive grasslands.
Name 3 countries that are temperate Forest biome
Germany – Deciduous forests cover much of the country.
United States – Eastern U.S. is rich in temperate deciduous forests.
Japan – Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests across Honshu and Hokkaido.
Name 3 countries that are Mountain Vegetation biome
Nepal – Home to the Himalayas, including Mount Everest.
Switzerland – Alpine vegetation in the Swiss Alps.
Peru – Andes Mountains with high-altitude flora.
Name all of the biomes in oder from coldest to warmest
- polar
- tundra
- boreal forest
4.mountain vegation - temperate forest
- grassland biome
- desert
- tropical forest
Name the 4 colder biomes
Polar Lands, Tundra, Boreal forest, Mountain Vegetation
Name the 5 warmer biomes
Temperate Forest, Grasslands, Desert, Tropical Forest
Physical charistics of (polar) biomes
Polar habitats cover the top and bottom of the planet – at the poles
Around 99% of this biome is covered in ice
climatic characteristics (polar)
long cold winters, with annual temperatures mostly below freezing.
Polar areas are often windy, with very littleprecipitation.
Permanentice capscover polar landscapes.
Name some native animals of colder biomes (polar)
Polar bears live in the Arctic
Penguins live in the Antarctic
Whales, seals and snowy owls are also found in polar regions.
