what is the perioheral nervous system
a system that transmits messages via millions on neurons to and from the CNS. It’s divided into the “autonomic” and “Somatic” nervous system.
what does the autonomic nervous system do
The ANS Governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses. it has an involuntary effect
whatbis the ANS split into
The “Sympathetic nervous system” which activates internal organs and increases bodily activities
Ths “parasympathetic nervous system” which relaxes internal organs and decreases activites
what is the somatic nervous system?
it transmits information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS. Its divided into recieves information from the CNS that directs muscles to act. has a voluntary effect
Types on neuron: Sensory
- It carries the nerve impulses from the sensory receptors to the spinal cord/ brain. (From PNS to CNS)
- usually located near the bodies surface.
- length of axon is short
- length of dendrite is long
Types of neuron relay
-It allows the sensory and motor neurons to comunicate with each other (most common neuron)
-found in the brain, spinal cord and visual system
axon is short
dendrite is short
types of neuron motor
- it carries nerve impulses from the spinal cord and brain to the effectors( muscles and glands) (from CNS to PNS)
- The axons are directly or indirectly linked to muscles
axon is long
dendrite is short
how to tell the difference between the neurons
Relay is always the flat/ squashed neuron
Motor neuron has its cell body inside the cell whilst the sensory neurons cell body is outside on the cell
