Q

What are the functions of the placenta

A
  • Provide fetus with oxygen and nutrients
  • Remove waste products
  • Produce hormones (progestrone, hCG, estrogen, etc)

Vital for growth and development of fetus

14
Q

Penetration involves

A

Sperm penetrates the zona pellucida and fused with oocyte membrane

15
Q

Fusion involves

A

Nuclei of sperm and oocyte fusing to form a zygote

16
Q

Activation involves

A

Oocyte changing to become a zygote

17
Q

State hormones that can cross placenta and are harmful to the fetus

A

Thyroid Hormone
Adrenal Steroids
Insulin

18
Q

What is the site of implantation and when does it usually occur

A

Site is uterine wall: posterior-superior wall of endometrium

6-10 days after fertilization

19
Q

What is Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

A

One twin receives too much blood (heart failure)

Other receives too little (anemia)

20
Q

What is a congenital infection

A

Infection acquired during pregnancy

21
Q

What is an ectopic pregnancy?

A

Blastocyst implants outside the uterine cavity
Commonly in the fallopian tubes

22
Q

What is fetal anemia

A

Condition in which baby/fetus has a decreased amount of red blood cells

23
Physical features of fetal alcohol syndrome
Smooth ridge between nose and upper lip Thin upper lip Small eyes Low body weight Short height
24
What is notochord?
Rod-like structure Provides template for development of vertebral column Provides midline axis for development of embryo
25
A pregnant woman contracts rubella virus in her 1st trimester of pregnancy What effects will it have?
- Birth defects (cataracts, deafness, heart defects etc) - Increased risk of congenital rubella syndrome (if contracted within first 12 weeks) Vaccination against it is essential for preventing this
26
Cause of Prader-Willi syndrome
Microdeletion on chromosome 15
27
Features of Klinefelter syndrome
- males only - usually detected at puberty - sterility - testicular atrophy - gynecomastia - hyalinization of seminiferous tubules
28
What is genotype of turner syndrome
45 X or rare cases like 46 XX or 46 XY
29
Karyotype of klinefelter syndrome
47XXY
