Blood supply to brain Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
How does oxygenated blood mainly get into the brain?
A
- Carotid arteries
- Vertebral artery
2
Q
What are venous sinuses?
A
-Drain blood back into the veins in the neck
3
Q
What vessels supply the anterior part of the brain?
A
-From heart and aorta through internal and external carotid artery.
4
Q
What vessels supply the posterior part of the brain?
A
- Vertebral arteries.
- Basilar artery.
5
Q
Describe the Circle of Willis?
A
- It is interconnecting arteries at the base of the brain.
- Connects carotid and basilar to supply blood to whole brain.
- Internal carotid artery supplies anterior and middle cerebral arteries.
- Basilar artery supplies posterior cerebral arteries.
6
Q
Now grab a piece of paper and draw the Circle of Willis?
A
Label:
- Vertebral arteries
- Basilar artery
- Posterior cerebral artery
- Posterior communicating artery
- Middle cerebral artery
- Internal carotid artery
- Anterior communicating artery
- Anterior cerebral artery
7
Q
Describe the blood - brain barrier?
A
- Isolates CNS neural tissue from general circulation.
- Formed by network of tight junctions.
- Astrocytes control barrier by releasing chemicals that control permeability of endothelium.
8
Q
What is Cerebrovascular disease?
A
- A disorder which interferes with blood circulation to brain.
- Also known as a stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA).
