Blow moulding details Flashcards
(3 cards)
What are some advantages of blow moulding?
Efficient for mass production
Creates hollow products easily
Low material waste (waste can be recycled)
Creates complex designs and shapes
Lightweight products
Can use recycled products
What are some disadvantages of blow moulding?
High cost machinery
Limited to only hollow shapes
Quality control issues as wall thickness can vary
Requires skilled technicians as it requires a skilled setup
What is the process of blow moulding?
Plastic pellets are fed into a ‘hopper’ which stores it
A large thread turned by a motor feeds pellets through a heated section
Pellets melt and become a liquid which is fed into the mould
Air is forced into the mould which forces plastic to the sides give the shape of the bottle
Mould is cooled and then removed
