What are the advantages of vacuum forming?

A

Uses low pressure, reduces tool costs
Moulds can be made from ‘cheaper’ materials
Reasonably quick production time
Prototypes and lower quality products can be made cost effectively

What are the disadvantages of vacuum forming?

A

Mould must have a large draft angle
Base polymer must be trimmed as it comes as a sheet
Creates waste (but can be recycled)
Low quality process
No internal detail

What is the process of vacuum forming?

A

Mould is placed on the bed
A thermoplastic sheet is secured above the mould
Plastic is heated until soft and flexible
Mould is lifted into the plastic
Vacuum pump removes the air and plastic forms tightly around the shape of the mould
Mould is lowered and plastic is removed
Excess plastic is cut off
