How does offset lithography work?
Images are transferred on metal plates are transferred to rollers which then can print the image
How does screen printing work?
For small batches
Stencil is placed below mesh screen and paper is placed below
Ink is spread over the screen
Ink is transferred to the paper through the stencil
How does gavure work?
Image is etched with acid or a laser into a metal plate
Cavities are filled with ink and transferred to the paper
Produces high quality images
What is the process of painting timbers?
Clean and sand surface
Prime surface so paint can adhere better
Paint surface
Why are varnishes used on timbers?
Change the appearance of surface e.g. shiny, alter the colour
Why are waxes used on timbers?
Finishes and protects wood
Why are oils used on timbers?
Replenishes oils that have been lost over time
What is the process of tanalising timbers?
Wood is placed in a tank and air is drawn out
Tank is flooded with preservative treatments and pressure is applied
Wood is left to dry
How does dip/ powder coating work on metals?
Metal is heated
It then either is dipped in plastic powder or sprayed with negatively charged powder which is attracted to the metal
Metal is placed in oven and baked until smooth and shiny
What is the process of galvanising metals?
To protect iron or steel from rusting
Base metal is coated in a more reactive metal such as zinc
