Bonding Flashcards
(19 cards)
Why do atoms react together
Atoms react together to form a s²p⁶ structure(same as noble gas)
What are the 3 methods atoms can gain a s²p⁶ outer structure
1) lose electrons
2) gain electrons
3) share electrons
What is a ionic bond
This is the force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
How is an ionic bond formed
This is formed through the transfer of electrons and the oppositely charged ions will attract
What is a covalent bond
This is where 2 atoms share a pair of electons
How is a covalent bond formed
Each atom supplies 1 electron and this forms a single covalent bond
What is a dative covalent and how is it formed
This is a covalent bond but the pair of electons is supplied by only one of the atoms
What is a metallic bond
This is the force of attraction between the metal cation and delocalised electrons
What is electro negativity
This is the ability of an atom to to pull a pair of electrons towards itself in a covalent bond
Why does F have the highest electronegativity
This is because it
What does electronegativity help you predict
It helps you predict the type of bond ie. Ionic, covalent or metallic
What type of bond is formed when the difference in electronegativity is small
The bond formed will be covalent
What does the term
‘polar covalent’ mean
This means that there is a reasonable difference in electronegativity between the 2 atoms. This is indicated as a dipole δ+ or δ-
What happens if the difference in electronegativity is large
The bonding will be ionic
What type of bond is it if both atoms present have an electronegativity between 1.6-1.9
The bonding will be metalic
How can we tell if a bond is covalent
Difference in electronegativity is less than 0.5
What type of bonding is it when the difference in electronegativity is less than 2.1
This means the bond is polar covalent
How can you tell if bond is ionic
If the difference in electronegativity is above 2.5
What is polarisation
Tendency of a cation to distort the charge cloud of an anion causing covalent charecter
