What are ionic compounds
Ionic compounds are compounds made up of oppositely charges ions.
If a compound is neutral what does this suggest about the charges inside the compound
This suggests there must be an equal amount of negative and positive charged ion
How can we work out a formula of a compound
This can be done by identifying the charges on the ions using the periodic table and balancing the charges appropriately
What ions will be formed from a element in the groups:1,2,3 5,6,7
They will form:1+,2+,3+ 3-,2-,1-
What is the formula of hydroxide and sulfate
OH-
SO4^2-
What is the formula of carbonate and nitrate
CO3^2-
NO3^-
What is the formula for hydrogen carbonate and phosphate
HCO3^-
PO4^3-
What is the formula for sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid
H^2 SO^4
HCL
What is the formula for nitric acid and ammonia
HNO3
NH3
What is the formula for methane and water
CH4
H2O
When should brackets be used in a formula
Brackets should be used when an ion with more than 1 atom are needed more than once
