bONDinG N That Jazz Flashcards
(10 cards)
Describe the structure of ionic compounds
Giant ionic 3D lattice
Ionic compound bonding?
An ELECTROSTATIC FORCE OF ATTRACTION between the oppositely charged ions
Why are ionic compounds hard
They consist of a REGULAR PATTERN of oppositely charged ions with STRONG BONDS between them
Why are ionic compounds brittle?
After a sharp blow the like charged ions will come into contact with eachother and repel eachother, and the structure will fall apart
Why do ionic compounds have a high melting point?
It takes a lot of energy to break the STONG ELECTROSTATIC FORCES OF ATTRACTION between the oPPOSITELY CHARGED IONS
it also has a GIANT STRUCTURE
Why are ionic compounds soluble in water?
The water molecules are able to break down the IONIC BONDS BETWEEN THE OPPOSITELY CHARGED IONS
when do ionic compounds conduct electricity?
When they’re molten / aqueous
Why do solid ionic compounds not conduct electricity ?
This ions aren’t free to move to the electrodes as they’re held together by STRONG ELECTROSTATIC FORCES OF ATTRACTION
what are 3 examples of macromolecules?
Diamond
Graphite
Sand??
Describe the structure of diamond
The Strong Covelant bonds for a GIANT 3-D TETRAHEDRAL LATTICE
