Bone Flashcards
(9 cards)
Osteoblasts
Form bones Cuboidal cell body Secrete collagen and ground substance At surface of bone tissue Form matrix and collagen fibers, but can’t divide
Osteocytes
Flattened spindle shape
Within lacunae in lamellae
Mature cells that no longer secrete matrix
Osteoclasts
Howship’s lacuna
Reabsorb bone cells
Release lysosomes
Multinuclear cell
Present at area of bone where it is removed
Huge cells from fused monocytes, function in bone resorption at surfaces such as endosteum
Types of bone tissue
Woven bone
Lamellar bone
Woven bone
Cells randomly arranged
Replaced by secondary bone in adults
Lamellar bone
Compact - weight bearing and structural support
Spongy - Marrow cavity , trabecular and light weight
Trabecular bone
Lattice of plates of trabecular (bone) alone stress line
Filled with red bone marrow
Present at ends of long bones and inside flat bones
Sternum, side of skull, ribs and hipbones
Compact bone
Hard layer of bone
Makes up shaft of long bones and external layer
Osteon/haversian system - Structural unit, parallel to bone
Concentric lamellae - collagen fibres arranged randomly
Osteoprogenitor cells
Undifferentiated cells found in inner layer of periosteum and endosteum
