Proposed that prolonged emotional deprivation has long term consequences in terms of emotional development
Value of maternal care-believed that it wasnt enough to ensure a child is well fed and kept safe, however a warm intimate and continuous relationship is needed to ensure continuing ideal mental health
Critical period- young children that are denied such care become emotionally distubed, this only happens in a critical period in development, before 2 yrs

Findings for maternal deprivations, research shows that women who have experienced seperation from their mothers for at least a year found 25 percent experienced depression or anxiety disorders
compared with 15 percent of a control group
-Results shown intensity of mental health issuses was greater in those who expericned seperation before age of 6 years
AO3
Evidence for 44 theives is flawed
as bowbly conducted the interviews with the children and the families himself
This could lead to bias as he may expect certain children to be affectionless
This conclusion would be deemed unethical today
AO3
-Bowlby may be confused with deprivation with privation
Deprivation occors when an attachment that already exists has been broken
Privation is the absence of something desired
Rutter observed that emotionless psychopathy is a result of privation rather than deprivation
44 thieves study
-Studied 88 children who were emotionally maladjusted , half the children were being accused of stealing other 44 was a control group
Interviewed for being affectionless psychopaths, bowlby suggested these characteristics enabled the children to be theives
Familes also got interviewed by bowlby to establish whether the thieves had had prolonged periods of seperation
Thieves data was compared with control group
Findings- 14 of the 44 thieves were affectionless psychos and 86 percent of these 14 had periods of seperation
of the control group two had prolonged seperation
