Boyle's law Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
What is Boyle’s Law?
A
For a fixed mass of gas kept at constant temperature, the volume of the gas is inversely proportional to its pressure meaning that if the volume increases, the pressure decreases
2
Q
How can you write Boyle’s Law as a formula?
A
Pressure is inversely proportional to the volume and can be written as PV = constant or p1V1 = p2V2
3
Q
Explain p1V1 = p2V2
A
For a gas at constant temperature, pressure x volume always equals the same constant. Therefore:
p1V1 = p2V2
Where:
p1 is the initial pressure
V1 is the initial volume
p2 is the pressure after a change occurs
V2 is the volume after a change occurs
