Solids, liquids and gases Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does rigidity mean?
How easy to change its shape
What does compressibility mean?
How easy to change its volume
What does density mean?
How much mass in a fixed volume
How do particles move in a solid?
They vibrate a litte about their fixed positions
What are the bonds of particles in a solid?
They have strong chemical bonds between neighbouring particles which keeps them fixed in place
What are the properties of a solid?
Particles regularly arranged and rigid (not easily deformed), dense, incompressible
How do particles move in a liquid?
They move freely and therefore have constantly changing neighbours while still touching other particles
What are the bonds of particles in a liquid?
They are weakly bonded to neighbours
What are the properties of a liquid?
Not rigid - can flow, incompressible, less dense, particles randomly arranged
How do particles move in a gas?
Move random directions constantly at a range of speeds, colliding with each other and container wall
What are the bonds of particles in a liquid?
They have none or very weak forces, the distances between particles are large compared with their size
What are the properties of a gas?
They fill their container, compressible, very low density, particles randomly arranged
