brendegen 2005 Flashcards
(8 cards)
aim
to investigate if social aggression could be caused by genes or the environment
procedure
234 twin pairs from the Quebec newborn twin study MZ + DZ // two ratings of twins behaviour - teachers and peers // data gathered at 5,18,30,48,60 months then again at 6 years old. // teacher ratings were measured on a 3 point scale 0= never 3= often on statements such as to what extent does …. get into fights // peer ratings were measured by giving each classmate a booklet with classmates faces and they were told to circle three faces who were most likely to eg ‘get into fights’ ‘tell others not to play with a child’
findings
teachers found that boys were more likely to be physically aggressive than girls and girls were more likely to be socially aggressive than boys. peers found boys to be more physically and socially aggressive // MZ correlation for physical aggression 2x more than dz // MZ +DZ correlation for social aggression was the same
conclusion
there’s a strong genetic component when it comes to physical aggression but not social aggression which is more than likely due to environment // physically aggressive children more likely ti be socially aggressive as children age more likely to show aggression socially due to social expectations
