leve et al 2010 Flashcards
(6 cards)
aim
to look at environmental issues related to parenting and family processes that interact with genetic factors on a child
procedure
360 sets of adoptive triads used all recruited within 3 months of birth during 2003-2006 - questionnaires and interviews asked the birth and adoptive parents questions on intelligence testing and anti social personality- telephone interviews were conducted in between the in person assessments and asked questions on general well being and the Childs daily behaviour- temperament tasks were given to the children aswell as parent child activities + standardised tests- saliva collected 30 mins after waking up and before going to sleep to see genes associated with depression, anxiety, anti social personality and attention problems- pre school and nursery teachers contributed to the study by filling out a questionnaire on a website, reading performance was measured at 72 and 84 months.
findings
1)birth parents externalisation of depression/anxiety causes child to externalise frustration but can shift
2) birth and adoptive parents externalisation = child can’t shift mood
conclusion
genetic factors in an adopted child can interact with environmental influences within the adoptive family to produce behaviour and if such things are known about, there can be intervention to alleviate the issue
:) large sample size
used a sample of 360 adoptive triads, of birth parents the adoptive parents and the child twins. also they used a correlational analysis to check the demographics of the different parts of the sample to ensure similarity to the target population. T/F the sample can be seen to be representative so the findings that behaviour is influenced by both nature and nurture can be generalised to the target population
:) range of methods used
leve et al used a range of methods to conduct their study including questionnaires given before the interviews ao the responses could be cross referenced. also they collected cortisol three times throughout the study which helps with reliability t/f the researchers could use triangulation to check the validity and reliability of their findings that behaviour is influenced by both nature and nurture
