Q

How does the bridge subvert conventions

A

Introducing more novel elements, Elements of action through chase scene, horror conventions through tense build up music and supernatural, physiological thriller through slow pace and murder scene, strong unusual heroine who is flawed, otherworldly elements, stylised murders represent art and surrealism

17
Q

Sagas facial expressions

A

Very passive and rarely changes, it’s only after the final scenes of the episode with the explosion and confronted with her mother she seems to be disconcerted and afraid

18
Q

Shots

A

Establishing shots are used to quickly communicate meaning eg the bridge which indicates changes in setting between Sweden and Denmark.

Birds Eye city view shots create verisimilitude, establishing real city which adds to belivibility of characters

19
Q

Editing, music and audio codes

A

Post production editing creates desaturated colour pallete

The music is a haunting track adding to slow pace of the programme + tense music at the start of the episode creates inter textual references to the horror genre

Diegetic sounds such as the clicking of crime scene investigators cameras establishes realism + sound of the cans followed by a disconcerting silence at the cabin is unsettling and an action code for explosion

20
Q

Sagas Dialoge

A

Clipped and at times forced, expresses she’s very literal in her understanding and honest.
Eg when asked ‘can you hurry up abit’ she bluntly says no
She stated ‘ I don’t like my mum’ insight into backstory

21
Q

Hanne thomsen

A

Strong female character who is well respected and good at her job
She exemplifies cultural differences between Sweden and Denmark due to her prejudices for Swedish political correctness.
She seemed visably offended when she is described as ‘abit Swedish’

22
Q

Tensions between Sweden and Denmark?

A

They have fought several wars over territory and influence

23
Q

Hendrik and hans

A

Hans is a positive representation of age hierarchically powerful but he doesn’t use his power oppressively, he could be seen as more cementing and has equal relationship with his partner Lillian who is a strong woman.

Hendrik is portrayed as flawed and vulnerable with issues, he represents domestic roles as he cooks and cleans + male cleaner Rikard.

24
Q

Bell hooks and van zoonen in the bridge

A

Bell hooks says feminism is a struggle to end patriarchal oppression, patriarchal representations are evident in crime dramas, the bridge constructs representations which challenge this, reflecting changing idiologies - however the victim is a female with liberal views, represents society’s need to change

Van zoonen says gender is constructed through discourse and its meaning varies overtime- the representations in the bridge show this change. However in the bridge women are framed in a way similar to men they are active not passive. Saga takes of her shirt, she is not objectified
