What was the decline of The Mughal Empire?
The decline of the Mughal Empire was a gradual process that first started when the East India Company came to India, they were initially focused on trade, but after looking around the country for a while they really admired India from there markets to there architecture so the East India Company wanted to take over India and the East India Company gradually expanded there influence and power over India and when The Nawab of Bengal lost the Battle of Plassey the East India Company really started to take control of the Mughal Empire.
What was the connection between Clive and India?
Robert Clive played a key role in establishing British control over India. Robert Clive was a British military officer and administrator for The East India Company. His actions were essential in transforming the company from a commercial enterprise to a political and military power in India. Clive was most famous for winning the battle of Plassey, he defeated the Nawab of Bengal. Clive served as the governor of Bengal. Clive was accused of corruption and faced political scrutiny in Britain. Clive was instrumental in establishing British colonial dominance in India.
What was the Early Indian Resistance?
The Early Indian Resistance was when Indian Rulers and States fought against the British. They did this to maintain there sovereignty and free will. There were also some Tribal and Peasant Rebellions against the British usually due to high taxes and land policies. However The Early Indian Resistance often lacked unification and coordination between leaders which led to defeat for the Indians.
What was The Indian Mutiny?
The Indian Mutiny was a rebellion that began in 1857 when Indian soldiers called sepoys in the East India Company’s army rebelled. The rebellion began when soldiers were forced to use rifle cartridges that were rumoured to be greased with cow and pig fat which severely offended Hindus and Muslims. This lead to a man called Mangal Pandy to step out of line and shoot at a British Officer during a parade. The mutiny spread to many parts of North and Central India and local rulers, peasants, and the general public supported the mutiny. Rebels wanted to remove British control and restore Indian rule. However the British crushed the rebellion after about a year.
What was the British Raj?
After the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the British government took control of India from the East India Company. This rule was called the British Raj (Raj means reign in Hindu). India was made part of the British Empire. British officials controlled laws, administration, and the army. Indians had very limited power and were mostly excluded from decision making. After World War II Britain could no longer hold on to India and India gained independence by 1947 and the British Raj ended.
