What were some of Henry VIII problems and solutions regarding Religion?

A

Some of Henry VIII problems and solutions regarding religion is that Henry wanted to annul (Annul/Annulment is a legal or religious declaration that a marriage was never valid in the first place) his marriage to Catherine of Aragon because she hadn’t produced a male heir but the pope refused the annulment. Henry’s solution for this was that he passed the Act of Supremacy which makes him Head of the Church of England.

Q

What was the Dissolution of the Monasteries?

A

The Dissolution of the Monasteries was a process carried out by Henry VIII between 1536 and 1541 during which he closed down all monasteries in England. Henry did this for various reasons such as money and land as monasteries were extremely wealthy and owned large amounts of land and closing them allowed Henry to seize their riches which helped Henry to fund wars and government. Henry distributed the monasteries land to his nobles which strengthened loyalty to his rule and the Church of England. Henry also shut down all of the monasteries in England for Religious Control because after breaking from the Catholic Church Henry wanted to reduce the power of the Catholic Church in England and the monasteries were loyal to the Pope and symbolized Catholic authority and therefore shutting the monasteries down would increase Henry’s religious power and control.
