bt metal Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is a metal?
A metal is any of a class of elementary substances, such as gold, silver, or copper, characterized by opacity, ductility, conductivity, and a unique luster when freshly fractured.
What is a ferrous metal?
A ferrous metal is a metal containing iron as a principal element.
What is a non-ferrous metal?
A non-ferrous metal is a metal containing little or no iron.
What does hot-rolled mean?
Hot-rolled refers to rolling metal at a heat high enough to permit recrystallization, usually applied in blooms, slabs, billers, plates, or structural steel.
What does cold-rolled mean?
Cold-rolled refers to rolling metal at a temperature below that at which recrystallization occurs, to increase tensile strength or improve surface finish, usually applied on sheet and strip.
What does forge mean?
To forge means to form metal by heating and hammering.
What is an alloy?
An alloy is a substance composed of two or more metals, or of a metal and a nonmetal, intimately mixed as by fusing or electrodeposition.
What is patina?
Patina is a greenish film or encrustation produced by oxidation on the surface of old bronze and copper, often admired for its ornamental value.
What is rust?
Rust is the reddish brittle coating formed on the surface of iron, consisting essentially of hydrated iron oxide.
What is corrosion?
Corrosion is the gradual deterioration of metal by chemical action, as when exposed to weather, moisture, or other corroding agents.
What is galvanized iron?
Galvanized iron is metal, especially iron or steel, coated with zinc, typically by immersing in molten zinc to produce a coating of zinc-iron alloy.
What is hot-dip galvanizing?
Hot-dip galvanizing is the protective coating of ferrous metal by dipping in a bath of molten zinc.
What is zinc?
Zinc is a ductile, crystalline, bluish-white metallic element, used for galvanizing iron and steel and in making other alloys.
What is wire rope?
Wire rope is a heavy rope made of or containing wire strands twisted around a central core.
What is sheet metal?
Sheet metal is metal in thin sheets or plates, used in the manufacture of ductwork, flashing, and roofing.
What is black plate?
Black plate is cold-rolled sheet steel before pickling or cleaning, used for coating with zinc, tin, or terne metal.
What is wire gauge?
Wire gauge is a gauge calibrated for determining the diameter of wire or thickness of sheet metal, consisting of a steel plate with a series of standard-sized notches around the edge.
