What is hardwood?
The wood from a broad-leaved flowering tree or deciduous such as cherry, maple, and Philippine timber.
What is an evergreen?
Having foliage that remains green and functional throughout the year or through more than one growing season.
What is a conifer?

What is deciduous?
Shedding leaves annually or at the end of a growing season. The term is descriptive of most hardwoods and a few softwoods.
What is bark?

What is an annual ring?
A concentric layer of wood produced during a single year’s growth of a temperate tree.
What is springwood?
The softer, more porous portion of an annual ring that develops early in the growing season characterized by large, thin-walled cells. Also known as early wood.
What is summerwood?
The harder, darker, less porous portion of an annual ring that develops late in the growing season, characterized by compact, thick-walled cells. Also called late wood.
What is timber?
Wood suitable for use as a building material.
What is lumber?

What is dressed lumber?

What does seasoned mean in lumber?
Pertains to lumber that has been dried to reduce its moisture content and improve its serviceability.
What is surfaced green lumber?
Pertains to dressed lumber having a moisture content exceeding 19% at the time of manufacture.
What is kiln dried lumber?
Pertains to lumber seasoned in a kiln under controlled conditions of heat, air circulation, and humidity.
What is air-dried lumber?
Pertains to lumber seasoned by exposure to the atmosphere.
What is surfaced dry lumber?
Pertains to dressed lumber having a moisture content of 19% or less at the time of manufacture.
What is oven dry lumber?
Pertains to lumber dried to a point at which no moisture can be extracted when exposed in a kiln to a temperature of 214 deg to 221 deg F (101 deg to 105 deg C).
