Building Sytems Flashcards
(16 cards)
The portion of the building below the ground
substructure
the portion above it is
superstructure
It is the lowest part of a structure below the ground level and which is in
direct contact with the ground, and transmits all dead, live and other loads
to the soil beneath in a manner that these do not stress the soil beyond its
safe allowable bearing capacity
Foundation
The pressure which the foundation exerts on the soil compresses the soil making the foundation to move downwards.
Settlement
Some soils are simply not capable of supporting the weight or bearing pressure exerted by a building’s foundation.
Weak Bearing Soils
occurs when the weight of a structure or newly-placed fill soils compress lower, weak clayey soils
Soil Consolidation
These are constructed
with various types of
material ranging from
blocks, bricks, concrete,
stones.
Walls
The internal walls help to
divide the building into
room spaces and are
called
Partition walls

enclosed by the external walls and
roof horizontally.
Floors
are treated as floors and
are meant to provide
access between
floors.
Stairs
connecting link between the
internal parts and to allow free
movement to the outside of the
building.
Door
an opening in a wall of a building to serve one or more of the functions like natural light,
natural ventilation and vision
Window
they should be strong enough to resist the adverse effects of the weather
Weather resistance
Sound and thermal insulation
They should be capable of being made air tight to achieve insulation against sound and heat
They should offer fire resistance and should be durable
Fire resistance and durability
