What is bullying?
- Deliberately hurtful to someone
- Repeated over time
- Difficult for the other person to defend themselves against the bullying because the bully usually picks someone who is weaker (psychologically or physically)
Describe a bully
Someone who
- dominates, blames & uses other people
- feels they own the right to make people feel bad about themselves
- is egocentric (only think about themselves)
- don’t realise that their actions have consequences
- lack empathy
- they are not bad, their behaviour is bad
What difference might lead a bully to pick on someone? (8)

Culture
Disability
Gender
Religion
Economic Status
Body size
Sexual orientation
Why do people bully?
Makes them feel powerful
But there is not single cause. Risk factors include:
- child’s personality & psychology
- family
- peer group & society
What to do if you are bullying others
- stop bullying others! (it takes courage)
- treat others how you want to be treated
- talk to a grownup you trust about your strong feelings & ask for help
- always keep your hands/feet to yourself!
- if you start to feel upset/angry: take deep breaths, take deep breathes & don’t bully, instead think about better choices
What to do if you are being bullied
- don’t keep it a secret - tell someone (it is not your fault!)
- avoid/ignore the bully
- surround yourself with other people
- don’t bully back; violence is never the answer
- call Childline South Africa to speak to someone anonymously
What can schools do to prevent/reduce bullying?
- have a specific teacher at the school who deals bullying
- have a peer-support at school where older children are trained to help younger children who are being bullied
List personal/psychological factors that could lead to bullying
- poor self-esteem
- being insecure about physical appearance / abilities / academic achievement
- Feeling like they don’t fit in
- Being afraid of being bullied / have been bullied
List family factors that could lead to bullying
- Lack of parental warmth / involvement
- Lack of supervision by parents
- Harsh physical discipline (could neglected/abused)
- Parent modelling of bullying behaviour
List societal factors that could lead to bullying
- Negative peer pressure (wanting to fit in & be liked)
- Seeing bullying behaviour on tv / movies / video games
- Being jealous of others
- Wanting to show off / get attention
What does harass mean?
to annoy or bother someone
What does discriminate mean?
to treat one person or group differently (worse than or better than) another one, usually because of race, age, religion or gender
Why do we have an Anti-Bullying week?
to raise awareness of
- different types of bullying
- effects of bullying
- ways to help those affected by bullying

(encouraging people to use their power to speak up and raise awareness about
bullying, both in person and online.)
Where does bullying happen?
Anywhere
At school but other places too
Especially social media apps and online
Give examples of physical bullying
deliberately
- pushing
- punching
- hitting
- kicking
- taking and/or breaking someone’s stuff
Discuss verbal bullying
- Hard to spot because does not leave physical marks
- Affects us mentally
examples:- hurtful comments
- name calling
- teasing
- making threats
What is social bullying
- bullying by excluding someone (eg leaving out of a game, teling others to leave them out or talking behind their back)
- doing things to embarrass someone
- can be in real life or by sending message about them

What can you do to help someone who is being bullied?
- be a friend to them
- invite them to play with you
- be mediator in the situation
- if you witness bullying (or even if they just tell you about it): report it to a parent/teacher (anonymously if you want)
