Describe the rites of passage in Juddaism around birth

  1. child only considered to be Jewish if mother Jewish
  2. if the child is a girl:
    • father announces her name in the synagogue on her first Sabbath (Saturday)
    • special prayer said
    • Ceremony is called Simchat bat (the joy of a daughter)
  3. if the child is a boy :
    - circumcised at home 8 days after birth
    - circumcision ceremony (Brit Milah or the Covenant of Circumcision) attended by all male family members
    - godfather holds the baby while trained rabbior mohul (doctor) performs the circumcision
    - the boy is then named
    - then family celebrates & drinks wine

Describe the rites of passage in Juddaism around marriage / weddings

A
  1. Wedding contract (ketuba) between couple
  2. Married under a wedding canopy (chuppah)
  3. Groom gives bride a ring & breaks a glass with his foot (as a reminder that even in times of joy they must remember the sad times when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed)
  4. Feasting & dancing later

Describe the rites of passage in Juddaism around death

A
  1. Body is cleaned, wrapped in a shroud & put in a plain wooden coffin
  2. Burial must happen ASAP (withint 48 hours)
  3. Family tear their clothes to show sorrow
  4. Special prayer ( Kaddish ) said at funeral. Said for the next year, sometimes every day
  5. people who are mourning visit the dead person’s home for 7 days ( Shiva )
  6. Each year on the date of the funeral, the family lights a candle & says the Kaddish to remember the dead person
