First degree burns (partial thickness) involving epidermis [sunburn]
Second degree burns (partial thickness) involving epidermis and dermis [moderate sunburn]. Color may be whitish. May blister and painful
Third degree burn (full thickness). Involves epidermis, dermis, sub Q tissue and maybe muscle to the bone. Color may be black, brown, white. No pain
