C 8.1 Polymers and plastics Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a polymer?
A long-chain molecule made by joining many small molecules called monomers.
What is a monomer?
A small, reactive molecule that can join with other monomers to form a polymer.
What is polymerisation?
A chemical reaction where many monomers join together to form a polymer.
What type of monomer forms addition polymers?
Alkenes, because they contain a carbon–carbon double bond (C=C).
What is addition polymerisation?
A reaction where alkene monomers join to form a polymer, with no other products formed.
Give an example of an addition polymer and its monomer.
Poly(ethene), made from ethene monomers.
Why are plastics useful materials?
They are durable, lightweight, waterproof, resistant to corrosion, and can be moulded into different shapes.
What are some common uses of plastics?
Bottles, bags, packaging, containers, insulation, pipes, and clothing.
Why are plastics an environmental problem?
Most are non-biodegradable and persist in landfills or the ocean, causing pollution and harming wildlife.
How can we reduce the environmental impact of plastics?
By recycling, reusing, using biodegradable alternatives, and reducing single-use plastics.
