: Tea made from boiling plant
material
DECOCTION
: Tea made by pouring water over
plant material and the mixture is then allowed
to steep
* Water is usually boiling (hot tea usually is an
excellent way to administer herbs), but cold
infusion is also an option
INFUSION
: Extract of plant made by soaking
herb in a dark place with a desired amount of
either alcohol, glycerin or vinegar in 2-6 weeks
* Liquid is strained from the plant material
TINCTURE
: Aromatic volatile oils
extracted from the leaves, stems, flower, and
other parts of plant
* Dilution of this highly concentrated oil
ESSENTIAL OIL
: Extract of plant is added either to
alcohol or vinegar and is applied topically *
LINIMENT
- All-purpose woman’s tonic
- Frequently mixed w/ fillers
- Contains vitamin B12
DONG QUAI
: Topical application of a soft,
moist mass of plant material usually wrapped in
a fine woven cloth
POULTICE
: Process of extraction
in which the volatile oils of a plant substance is
obtained by soaking the plant in a carrier oil for
approximately 2 weeks then straining the oil
* Oil contain the plant aromatic characteristic
HERB-INFUSED OIL
: Extract the soluble
constituents of a plant with the assistance of
gravity
* Material is moistened and packed into tall
conical vessel, liquid (menstruum) poured
into the material and allowed to steep for a
certain length of time
PERCOLATION
: collection of desired
part into a container through scooping
CUTTING/SCOOPING
Natural estrogen promoter; may lower seizure
threshold if taken w/ an anticonvulsant.
EVENING PROMISE
- Relief of digestive complaints
- May have sedative effects
treat sleeplessness, anxiety and
stomach or intestinal ailment; with some
benefits in skin condition and oral ulcers due to
chemotherapy or radiation treatment. s/e:
allergic reaction to anaphylaxis
CHAMOMILE
External: relief of pain; promotes burn healing
- Internal: constipation; may cause arrhythmias,
neuropathies, edema
ALOE VERA
Interferes w/ platelet aggregation, for migraine
headaches, RA, PMS
FEVERFEW
- Stimulates immune system
- For colds, flu, recurrent respiratory & urinary tract
infections; limit use to 2 weeks
ECHINACEA
Detoxifies & increases immune function; decreases
platelet aggregation; for hypercholesterolemia, mild
HTN
reported to lower cholesterol, decrease
blood pressure and reduce heart disease. Also
been used to prevent cancer of the stomach and
colon. S/E: heartburn and upset stomach.
Reduces blood clotting hence cautioned to
those with bleeding disorders
GARLIC
CNS sedation w/o loss of mental acuity or memory;
may be hepatotoxic
KAVA KAVA
Antidepressant & antiviral; for depression, anxiety,
sleep disorders; effects in 4 & antidepressants; not of
benefit to HIV clients to 8 weeks; drug interactions:
transplant medications
ST JOHN’S WORT
Stimulates digestion; antispasmodic, decreases
platelet aggregation
use to treat post-operative, pregnancyrelated, and chemotherapy-related nausea as
well as motion sickness and diarrhea. May
relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness from
osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. S/E: gas,
bloating, heartburn and nausea
GINGER
- Stimulates immune system & bile secretion
GOLDENSEAL
used in heartburn, stomach ulcers,
gallstone, inflammation and cancer. Generally
safe but high doses can cause nausea or diarrhea
TURMERIC

POTENTIAL HAZARDS OF HERBS

- No preparations are safe in all situations
- Contamination
- Interaction w/ prescription & OTC drugs
adjunct to boost immune system,
such as Hepatitis and Cancer, to limit effects of
colds and flu. But some species contain
neurotoxin and therefore not safe for human
consumption
