C1 Flashcards
(9 cards)
The nuclear model
- It contains ‘proton’ & ‘neutrons’
- Has a radius of around 1/10000
What does a atom consits of?
Electron
Nutron
Proton
Nucleus
What are the: - Electrons - Protons - Nutrons And their relative Mass/Charge
Electron - very small Mass, -1 Charge
Proton - 1 Mass, +1 Charge
Nutrons - 1 Mass, 0 Charge
The Atomic number & Mass number
- Atomic number - the number of protons (on bottom)
- Mass number - number of protons + number nutrons (on top)
What are the :
- Periods
- Groups
- PCP(Predicting Charge Properties)
Periods - Elements with similar propertise ocuring at regular intervals
Groups - Elements in same column, have the same number of electrons in outer shell
PCP - Due to all elements in a colum have the same number of elements in the outer shell (all will react at the same time)
What are molecules
2 or more different atoms held together by chemical bonds
An example is ‘water’ Co2
What are Compounds
- 2 or more different elements held together by chemical bonds
- There can be millions or trillions of atoms, like salt for example
What is a formula
- It consits of huge structurs containing millions to billions of atoms, like salt
- There are ‘Ionic bonds’ to bulid large substances ( they arn’t counted as Molecules)
- If one were to have billions of atoms, then the other would have the same
Calculating ‘relitive atomic masses’
- Relitive atomic mass (Ar) = sum of (isotope abundunce x Isotope mass number) / Isotope abundance
