C2 - Ionic Bonds Flashcards
(14 cards)
Ionic bonds
- ionic bonding involves an attraction between oppositely charged ions
- inonc bonds are found in compounds made in metals and non-metals
Covalent bonding
- involving 2 atoms sharing 1 or more pairs of electrons
- covalent bonds are found in most non-metal elements and in compounds of non-metals
Metallic bonding
- Metallic bonding involves an attractions between positviely charged ions and negativliely charged, delocalised electrons
- Metallic bonds are found in metalic elements and alloys
Group 1 metals
Form positive ions with a single positive charge
Groups 2 metals
Formpositive ions with a double positive charge
Group 6 non-metals
From negative ions with a double negative charge
Group 7 non-metals
Form negative ions with a signle negative charge
Noble gases
Not usually involved in ionic bonding
What type of boding happens between monst non-metal elements
Covalent bonding
Positive ions (cations)
- Positive ions are usually created when an atom or molecule loses electrons
- The metals in group 1 & 2 can easily lose electrons to become positively charged ions
Negative ion (anions)
- Negastive ions are usually created when an atom or molecule gains electrons
- The non-metals in group 7 are most likely to gain electrons to fill up their electrons shell and become negatively charged
Ions containing multiple elements
Either:
- Single elements (e.g. F-)
- A group of elemtns with an overall charge (e.g. SO4^2-)
Positive ions
Usually created when an atom or molucule loses electrons
Negative ions
Negative ions are usually when an atom or molecule gains electrons
