C1 Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is an atom?
Smallest part of an element
What is an element?
A pure substance that can’t be broken down anymore. A substance containing one type of atom.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms held together by chemical bonds
What is a compound?
Two or more different elements chemically bonded together
What is a mixture?
Made from different substance not chemically bonded together.
What was the plum pudding atomic model?
The whole atom is positive charge with small negative charge particles. A sphere of positive charge with electrons embedded in it.
What did Rutherford discover?
That there is empty space in the atom.
He found it out by firing alpha particles at gold foil and seeing some deflect and some go straight through.
What did Bohr discover?
That the electrons orbit the nucleus in shells.
What did Chadwick discover?
He discovered Neutrons
What does the atomic number represent?
The number of protons and electrons
How do you work out the number of neutrons.
Mass number - atomic number
What does the Mass number equal
Protons + nuetrons
What is the aqueous solution?
The mixture made by adding a soluble substance to water.
What is a balanced symbol equation?
A symbol equation in which there are equal numbers of each type of atom on either side
What is the electronic structure?
A set of numbers to show the arrangement of electrons in their shells
What is an ion?
A charged particle produced by the loss or gain of electrons
What is an isotope?
Atoms that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. Eg they have higher mass number.
What is the law of conservation mass?
The total mass of the products formed in a reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants.
What are the noble gases?
The very unreactive gases found in group 0 of the periodic table. Their atoms have very stable electronic structures
