1
Q

How did Mendeleev place elements his periodic table?

A

By atomic weight and the he arranged them so that a periodic pattern in their properties could be seen. He left gaps for elements that had notyet been discovered then used the table to predict what properties they should have.

2
Q

What are chemical elements placed in order with?

A

Atomic (proton) number.

This arranges the elements so that they line up in groups with similar properties

Q

What is the main difference between metals and non-metals

A
  • Metals conduct electricity but non-metals are generally electrical insulators.
  • in general, metals also have much higher melting and boiling points
  • metals are malleable but non-metals are brittle

Q

How many electrons do noble gases have in their outer most shell?

Q

What are the properties of the alkali metals

A
  • Very reactive
  • Increase in reactivity as you go down the group
  • low density
  • soft

6
Q

Why have the Alkali metals got these properties?

A

Due to their electronic structure as they only have one electron in their outermost shell which makes them very reactive because they only need to lose one electron to get the stable electronic structure. Carry a 1+ charge

Q

What are the melting and boiling points of the Alkali metals?

A

They melt and boil at relatively low temperatures for metals. As you go down the group. The melting and boiling points get lower and lower.

Q

Properties of the halogens

A
  • Low melting and boiling point. Their melting points and boiling points increase going down the group
  • poor conductor of heat and electricity.

Q

What happens as you go down a group of electrons and the effects?

A

The number of shells increase by one per period.
Metals - larger atomes lose electrons easier
Non-metals - larger atoms gain electrons easily
