C10 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is a compound?
2 or more different elements held together by chemical bonds.
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
What is a mixture?
2 or more substances that are not chemically combined together
What is a pure substance?
A substance that contains only one type of element or compound. Melt and boil at specific temperatures
What is formulation?
Mixtures that have been prepared using a specific formula
-precise amounts of different components
-have a particular function
What is an impure substance
A mixture of two or more compounds or elements.
4 examples of formulations
Fuel, paint, medicine, food
What are ions
Ions are charged particles formed when atoms gain or lose electrons.
When atoms lose an electron forms a positive ion, when atoms gain an electron form a negative ion
What is an element?
Basic building blocks of all substances
Substance Made up of one type of atom
How are ionic compounds formed
When metals react with non metals
How do you find the formula of an ionic compound
-identify the ions, using the table of common ions
-cancel out the charges so the overall charge is
-construct the formuka by counting the number of each ion needed to cancel the charges
What is filtration
Used to seperate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Mixture poured through filter paper. Solid is filtered and liquid passes through
What is an insoluble solid
A solid that does not dissolve in liquid
What is crystallisation
A way to seperate a soluble solid from a liquid. Evaporate most of the liquid by heating it then crystals of the soluble solid are left behind
What is Simple Distillation
-Used to seperate a liquid from a soloution
-A liquid from a mixture of two miscible liquids
Simple dstillation involves the evaporation of the liquid from the mixture, followed by condensation
What is Fractional Distillation
-Seperates a mixture of two miscible liquids
Mixture heated to the lowest boiling point of the two liquids. The liquid with the lower boiling point will evaporate and condense leaving behind the other liquid
What is miscible?
When two liquids mix without forming a layer
