What is potable water
Water that is safe to drink
What are aquifers
Underground sources of water stored in rocks
Why is Fresh water not considered potable
Because fresh water may contain high levels of dissolved minerals (salts), and microorganisms from the soil and decaying matter
What is the job of using a screen made of metal bars
To trap and catch larger objects such as leaves and twigs
What is the job of the settlement tank
The water flows very slowly, allowing fine grained sand and soil to settle to the bottom
Why are aliminium sulfate and lime added to the water
This causes particles to clump together forming sludge, which then sinks to the bottom
What is done to get rid of mud and grit to make the freshwater clean
The fresh water is passed through a filter of fine sand and gravel
Why is chlorine added to the water?
To kill bacteria
What happens if the PH is not neutral when checked using a ph meter
The PH of the water is changed to 7 by adding chemicals
What is then done with the potable water
The potable water is then stored in large tanks and sent out to society
