C2 Year 9 Flashcards
(22 cards)
How many groups in the periodic table are there?
8
What are the horizontal lines on the periodic table called?
Periods
What is group 1 called?
Alkali metals.
What are 2 differences between transition metals and alkaline metals?
Transition metals have higher melting points
Transition metals have ions with different charges, form coloured compounds and are used as catalysts
What states of matter are group 7?
Solids liquids and gases
What state of matter is group 1?
Solids (metals)
What makes group 0 unreactive?
It’s outer shell has 8 electrons, so cannot lose or gain any electrons
What are the vertical rows called?
Groups
Describe the electron configuration of neon
(10 electrons)
2,8
What are the noble gases a part of?
Group 0
(Also known as group 8 or group 18)
What are group 7 called?
The halogens
What is an isotope?
An element with a different amount of neutrons, but the same amount of protons
Describe the reactivity of group 1
They increase in reactivity as you go down the group
This is because the outer electron is further from the nucleus
This electron is then more easily lost
Describe the reactivity of group 7
As you go down the group, the reactivity decreases
Outer electron is further away from the nucleus (attraction is weaker)
Harder to gain an electron
What is the charge of group 2?
(Ion)
2+
What is the charge of group 3?
(Ion)
3+
What is the charge of group 1?
(Ion)
1+
What is the charge of group 6?
(Ion)
2-
What is the charge of group 7?
(Ion)
1-
What is the charge of group 5?
(Ion)
3-
What are transition metals used for?
Catalysts to speed up the rate of reaction
What are the middle block of metals called?
Transition metals
