Q

How does fractional distillation of crude oil work?

A
  1. CO is heated and fed into the bottom of the column
  2. The column is hot at the bottom and cold at the top
  3. The gases move up the column and the hydrocarbons condense when they reach their boiling points

Q

What happens in a cracker?

A

A heavy fraction distilled from crude oil is heated to vaporise the hydrocarbons.
The vapour is either passed over a hot catalyst or mixed with steam and heated to very high temperatures
