C11 Flashcards
What happens during addition polymerisation?
- the double covalent bond between two carbon atoms ‘opens up’
- it’s replaced by a single bond, allowing thousands of molecules to join together
What is the product of addition polymerisation?
An addition polymer
What are the products of condensation polymerisation?
Condensation polymer + small molecule
What happens during condensation polymerisation?
Two small molecules (monomers) react with eachother and release a small molecule
What is a monosaccharide?
Something made of one sugar unit
What is a polysaccharide?
Polymers made of many monosaccharides
What is the structure of a starch polymer like?
- 1500 glucose monomers
- branched chains
What is the structure of a cellulose polymer like?
- 10,000 glucose monomers
- straight chains
Why does a cellulose polymer have stronger intermolecular forces than a starch polymer?
The chains of a cellulose polymer can line up neatly next to eachother, forming stronger intermolecular forces
What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids
What does a nucleotide look like?
Refer to notes
Describe the structure of DNA and what it is made up of
- it’s made up by the condensation polymerisation of monomers called nucleotides
- structure is a double helix
