What is attachment?
The motivational and behavioural system that directs a child to seek proximity with a primary caregiver when they are under stress
What is the reaction of the child in secure attachment?
Child readily explores using carer as secure base
Easily put down after being held
Confident
What is the role of the caregiver in secure attachment?
Appropriate response to upset
Appropriate encouragement to explore
Tuned into child’s needs
What is reaction of the child in anxious avoidant attachment?
Avoids or ignores the parent when he or she returns showing little over indication of an emotional response.
Often the stranger will not be treated differently from the parent
What is the role of the caregiver in anxious avoidant attachment?
Disinterested, uncomfortable with showing affection but overly encourages separation/independence
What is the reaction of the child in anxious ambivalent attachment?
Child explores little, wary of stranger.
When the mother departs the child is often highly distressed.
The child is however generally ambivalent when she returns
What is the role of the caregiver in anxious ambivalent attachment?
Inconsistent/unpredictable responses
