Q

What is asexual reproduction?

A

This is the production of offspring from a single organism without the production of gametes. The offspring is identical to the parent and only differs if random mutation occurs.

Q

What is fission?

A

This is the division of the cell into two or more daughter cells identical to the parent cell; the DNA replicates

Q

How does fission affect eukaryotes such as protoctists?

A

Eukaryotes contain a nucleus and therefore further undergo nuclear division

Q

What is multiple fission?

A

This is when the parent’s nucleus is repeatedly divided followed by the division into many daughter cells eg the malaria parasite. This makes it easy for diseases to spread

Q

How do fungi undergo asexual reproduction?

A

They undergo it via spores. Fungi are made up of fine tubes known as hyphae. The whole mass of the hyphae is called a mycelium. At the tip of the hyphae, spores are formed free or enclosed in a sporangium. The spores contain the nucleus (which is unfertilized) which is light and can easily be dispersed by the wind or even animals. Their germination is determined by where they’re dispersed. If not placed in a suitable area asexual reproduction will fail.
