Carbohydrates Flashcards
(16 cards)
Where is energy stored?
Energy is stored in C- C bonds harvested in cellular respiration
What are carbohydrates composed of?
C, H, O
Sugars
- Ends with -se, mostly
- classified by number of carbobns
- 6C= Glucose
- 5C= Ribose
- 3C Glyceraldehyde
Sugar Structure
- Glucose and Ribose form rings in solution
Simple Comple Sugars
1.) Monosaccharides
- Simple 1 monomer sugars
- glucose, Fructose, Galactose
2.) Dissacharide
- 2 Monomers
- Sucrose, maltose, Lactose
3.) Polysaccharide
- Large Polymers
- Starch
Polysaccharides structure
- cellulose (plants)
- chitin (arthropods and fungi)
Polysaccharides function
energy storage
- starch (plants)
- glycogen (animals)
- found in liver and muscles
Monomer
Sugar
Helpful bacteria
Bacteria live in a herbivored digestive system and helped digest cellulose- rich (grass)
Example
Sugar, cellulose, starches
Ex. Cow vs Gorilla
Cow can digest cellulose well; no need to eat other sugars.
Forilla can digest cellulose well; must add anothjer sugar source
Digestion (Starch vs Cellulose)
1.) Starch: Easy to digest
- all glycosidc linkage are on same side= molecules lies flat
2.) Celluilose: Hard to digest
- cross linking )H (H bonds)= rigid structure.
Cellulose
- Herbivored evolved a mechanism to digest cellulose
= most carnivores cannot just eat meat and survive - cellulose= unbdigestable roughpahe
Building Sugars
Monomers are joined together by dehydration synthesis
Alpha Vs. Beta
OH is on the bottom for alpha and beta is the opposite
Carbohydrate Function
- Fast Energy
- Raw Materials
- Structural materials
