What is the function of carbohydrates?
Provides the body with energy (1g provides 3.75kcal)
Has a protein sparing affect, so that protein is used for growth and repair rather than energy
Provides fibre to aid digestion and prevent bowel disorders
What are the sources of starchy and sugary carbohydrates?
Starchy - cereals, grains, pasta, rice, potatoes
Sugary - table sugar, sweets, cakes, biscuits, honey, fruit juice
What is the protein sparing effect of carbohydrate?
This is where the protein is used for growth and repair rather than energy
What is the percentage of dietary energy that should be provided by carbohydrate
About 50% dietary energy should come from carbohydrates

Reduces risk of obesity

Explain two differences between starches and sugars
Starches - slow release of energy, keeps blood sugar levels constant
Sugars-quick burst of energy, raises blood sugar levels quickly
