cardiovascular Flashcards
(31 cards)
what is the stroke volume?
the amount of blood pumped in by the left ventricle of the heart in one contraction
what is the DYASTOLIC pressure?
when the ventricle relaxes
what is SYSTOLIC pressure?
when the ventricle contracts
what is bradycardia?
reduction in the resting heartrate below 60bpm, effect of endurance training
what is the formula to find the cardiac output?
stroke volume x heartrate
what are the components of the blood?
plamsa, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
describe the functions of the right atria
blood enters through the vena cava into the right atria then through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle
what are 3 factors about arteries?
- carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
- thick muscular walls (for high blood pressure)
- small lumen
what are some features about veins?
- have valves
- thinner muscle
- larger lumen
- carry deoxygenated blood
what are some features about arterioles?
thinner walls than arteries, adjust and dilate to allow oxygen to get to working muscles
what do venules do?
connect blood leaving capillaries and transport back to veins
what are capillaries?
connect vessels to each other, smallest of vessels, very thin walls (one cell thick)
why do capillaries surround muscles?
to ensure they get the oxygen needed
another word for the inner layer of a vessel?
intima
another word for the middle layer of a vessel?
media
another word for the outer layer of a vessel?
adventia/ externa
what is the function of OXYGEN?
key element for aerobic production of energy
what is the function of CARBON DIOXIDE?
product of energy production
what is the function of HAEMOGLOBIN?
carries oxygen
what is OXYHAEMOGLOBIN?
name given to haeomoglobin when carrying oxygen
what is the function of WHITE BLOOD CELLS?
responsible for protecting you from infection and disease
what is the function of PLATELETS?
stops the bleeding should you cut yourself
what is the function of PLASMA?
fluid that enables other cells to move around the body
what is vascular shunting?
distribution of blood around the body
