Cardiovascular Health Flashcards
(48 cards)
What is atherosclerosis?
It’s the narrowing of the arteries resulting from plaque build up inside the artery wall.
What is plaque?
Plaque is patches of cholesterol, calcium and fat deposits that stick to the interior walls of arteries.
What happens as arteries narrow?
Blood pressure increases.
What happens if there’s a plaque blockage in a coronary artery?
The heart will become deprived of oxygen/nutrients.
What’s angina?
Angina is chest pains caused by mild coronary artery blockages.
What is anginoplasty?
A small metal mesh tube is inserted into the artery, where it’s then expanded to prevent the artery from closing up.

What’s angina?
Chest paints caused by mild coronary artery blockages.
What’s angioplasty?
A small metal mesh tube is inserted into the artery, where it then expands to prevent the artery from closing up.
What’s arteriosclerosis?
It occurs when plaque hardens on artery walls, causes a loss of elasticity which makes blood pressure increase.
What does arteriosclerosis increase the chance of?
Blood clot formation.
What’s the treatment for arteriosclerosis?
A Bypass surgery, where a vein is taken from another part of the body and used to make a “detour” around the plaque blockage.
What’s cholesterol?
A type of fat, part of cell membranes and used to make hormones, bile and vitamin D.
What’s cholesterol made by?
The liver
What’s the good type of cholesterol?
High density lipoprotein (HDL)
What does HDL do?
Helps remove excess cholesterol from arteries.
What’s the bad kind of cholesterol?
Low density lipoprotein (LDL)
What’s LDL do?
It becomes part of the plaque
What’s LDL found in?
Foods that are high in saturated/trans fats.
What’s a heart attack?
When blood supply to the heart is slowed or stopped. The heart continues to beat.
What’s a heart attack commonly caused by?
Commonly due to atherosclerosis.
