Cardiovascular system Flashcards
(5 cards)
Arteries (largest)
Thick outer wall, muscular and elastic layer
Carry blood away from the heart withstands pressure of fast- flowing blood being pumped from the heart
Veins
Thin outer wall, thin muscular, elastic layer
Carry deoxygenated blood from body back into the heart
Capillaries (smallest)
One cell thick
Diffuse substances across the capillary wall = exchanges materials in and out of cell
Pulmonary
Left side pumps oxygenated blood through the body via pulmonary vein
Right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via pulmonary artery
Systemic
Oxygenated blood travels from left ventricle to the body via aorta
Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to major organs
Blood re-enters the heart via the vena cava
