Function of respiratory system
Enable us to take in and expel air from the lungs
Oxygen into blood
Removes carbon dioxide from blood
Allows heat to leave the body
Creates speech and sense of smell
Nasal cavity
Nose and area just behind the nose
Air is warmed and moistened as it passes
Mucus and fine hairs capture dust and microbes (filters air)
Pharynx
Part of the throat at the back of the mouth
Divides into esophagus and larynx
Larynx (voice box)
Contain vocal cords and creates speech
Trachea (windpipe)
Made of smooth muscle which expands and contracts when breathing
Supported by rings of cartilage
Bronchi
Smooth muscle supported by cartilage
Branch off into bronchioles
Bronchioles
Subdivide into bronchi
Alveoli
Small air sacs which are covered by capillaries
Oxygen gets into the blood and carbon dioxide leaves the blood
Diaphragm
Involuntary smooth muscle at the bottom of the chest cavity
Contracts and relaxes
Pleura
Lines chest cavity, diaphragm and lungs
Parietal, visceral and pleural
Pleural cavity
Space in between both pleura
Filled with fluid that reduces friction between lungs and chest cavity
