What are the three types of blood vessels?
arteries, veins, and capillaries
What is the function of an artery?
- carry blood away from the heart
- pulmonary arteries carry blood to the lungs to become oxygenated
- arteries generally carry oxygenated blood to the body
What is the function of a vein?
-most veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart (dark reddish brown color)
What is the function of a capillary?
they are tiny vessels, usually a single cell layer thick
-they facilitate the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste between tissues and the blood stream
Three layers of the heart
epicardium
myocardium
endocardium
Pericardial sac
the double walled sac that contains the heart
-prevents the heart from rubbing against other organs and body structures as it beats
myocardium
heart muscle
allows the electrical impulses to pass quickly across muscle fibers as part of the heart’s unique electrical conduction system
angina
relating to spasmodic attacks of suffocating pain as related to an inflammatory condition of the throat or mouth or angina pectoris
*marked by chest pain due to deficient oxygenation of the heart muscle
angiocarditis
inflammation of the heart and vessels
angioplasty
surgical repair of vessels
arteriosclerosis
hardening of an artery
arteriotomy
incision into an artery
atherosclerosis
a type of arteriosclerosis characterized by lipid deposits causing fibrosis and calcification
